A French chemist, René Maurice Gattefossé, rediscovered the benefits of the ancient science of healing with volatile essential oils (now called aromatherapy) when he accidentally used lavender oil to help heal a burn. 

The term, Aromatherapy can be a little misleading in that, although the oils do have aromas, it is not purely the aroma that does the healing. Modern science has found a plethora of chemical constituents in essential oils that are capable of an incredible potential for healing. Although some of these are brought into the body through inhalation, they can also be absorbed through the skin or even through ingestion of some of the oils. Many of these constituents have well known properties, and some have properties that are yet to be discovered.
