Essential Oil Constituents

The following is a list of the various chemical constituents. Much of this information is taken from the French medical textbook L’aromatherapie by Dr. Daniel Penoel and Pierre Franchomme.

Aldehydes

Are highly organic compounds, They are antiseptic, calming when inhaled, and irritating when applied topically.

Carvacrol

is antiseptic and energizing

Basil, Mountain Savory, Melissa.

Citral

A type of aldehyde, this constituent is sedating and supports the immune system.

Bergamot, Lemongrass, Melissa

Esters

Are the compounds resulting from the reaction of an alcohol with an acid. Since esthers are not very water soluable, water may be added to the distillation, thus producing pure esthers.

Eugenol

Is a type of phenol. Eugenol si very antiseptic and stimulating. Because the properties are so strong, they are sometimes toxic to the central nervous system. Cinnamon leaf is distilled to extract the eugenol.

Farnesol

Is antiseptic and soothing to the skin. It is also good for mucus membranes, and prevents bacterial growth from perspiration

Lemongrass

Ketones

Are sometimes mucolytic and neuro-toxic when isolated from other constituents, and should be used with caution. They help support the immune system, stimulate cell regeneration, promote formation of tissue, and liquefy mucus.

Limonene

Has immune supporting and antiviral properties

Angelica, Dill, Fir, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin, Neroli, Nutmrg, Orange, Spearmint

Linalool

Also known as linalool, an antibacterial, relieves discomfort, tones without irritating, stimulates and supports the immune system, is sedating, and works as a diuretic

Basil, Clary Sage, Ginger, Neroli, Petigrain, Rose, Rosewood, Sage, Thyme, Wild Tansey, Ylang Ylang.

Monoterpenes

Includes pinene, camphene, sabinene, and limolene properties.

Phenols

Are antiseptic and antibacterial. Cresol, thymol, or carvacol found in thyme oil are very hot to the skin. They contain high levels of oxygenating molecules and antioxidant properties

Sesquiterpenes

Are antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. They work as a liver and gland stimulant, and contain caryophyllene and valenen. Recent research from the Universities of Berlin and Vienna show increased oxygenation around the pineal and pituitary glands.

Terpenes

Inhibit accumulation of toxins as well as discharge the toxins in certain organs, especially the liver and kidneys.

Terpene Alcohols

Are antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulates the immune system, and work as diuretics and general tonics

Citronella, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Juniper Berry, Myrtle, Neroli

Terpene Hydrocarbons

Are antiseptic and contain constituents such as limonine, pinene, and sebanine

Angelica, Basil, Clary Sage, Cypress, Dill Fennel, firm Frankincense, Galbanum, Ginger, Grapefruit, Hyssop, Juniper, Lemon, Mandarin, Myrtle, Neroli, Nutmeg, Orange, Rosemary, Spearmint

Thujone

Is toxic, can be irritating and upsetting to the central nervous system. Ir may be inhaled to relieve respiratory distress and may stimulate the immune system,

Clary Sage, Sage, Wild Tansy-very high.

Thymol

Is a strong antiseptic, but not as caustic as phenol

Cistus, Mountain Savory, Oregano
